📒 The 1-minute cheat sheet

📌 The Two Phases

  • Wernicke — confusion, ataxia, nystagmus. May reverse.
  • Korsakoff — memory loss with confabulation. Does NOT reverse.

📌 Confabulation

  • Memory gaps filled with invented stories
  • The client is not lying — they believe it
  • Redirect. Never present reality.

✅ Treatment

  • Thiamine (vitamin B1) replacement
  • Thiamine BEFORE glucose — always
  • Correct magnesium too
  • Stops it worsening; does not undo damage
