Benzodiazepines (lorazepam, diazepam, alprazolam, midazolam) enhance GABA to produce sedation, reduce anxiety, relax muscles, and stop seizures, and are also used for alcohol withdrawal. Their main dangers are CNS and respiratory depression, especially with other depressants, and dependence with long-term use. Flumazenil is the reversal agent. Memory aid: the '-pam/-lam' benzos calm the brain but slow the breathing.

What are the priority nursing interventions for Benzodiazepines?

Assess respiratory rate, level of consciousness, and sedation before and after dosing. Implement fall precautions, particularly in older adults. Avoid combining with other CNS depressants such as opioids and alcohol. Have flumazenil and resuscitation equipment available for overdose.

What are the warning signs of Benzodiazepines a nurse must report?

Respiratory depression, decreasing oxygen saturation, or oversedation, especially with concurrent opioids or alcohol. Abrupt withdrawal causing tremor, agitation, and seizures. Paradoxical reactions such as increased agitation or aggression. Severe drowsiness with an unprotected airway.

What do I need to know about Benzodiazepines for the NCLEX?

They cause CNS depression with sedation, drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired coordination. Respiratory depression is the main life-threatening risk, especially when combined with opioids or alcohol. Combining benzodiazepines with other CNS depressants greatly increases the risk of fatal respiratory depression. Long-term use leads to tolerance, dependence, and a dangerous withdrawal that can include seizures.

What patient teaching is important for Benzodiazepines?

Do not drink alcohol or take other sedating drugs with this medication. Avoid driving until you know how the medication affects you. Do not stop the medication abruptly; it must be tapered to avoid seizures.
