A low-protein diet reduces protein intake to decrease the buildup of nitrogenous waste, used in pre-dialysis chronic kidney disease and in liver failure with hepatic encephalopathy. Less protein means less urea and ammonia for the body to process. The diet must still provide enough calories to prevent the body from breaking down its own muscle.
